Domaine des Pothiers “No. 6”
Côte Roannaise, France | 2023
Domaine des Pothiers provides some of the oldest vineyard sites for the Côte Roannaise. Domaine des Pothiers and the Paires family have been in the Villemontais for over 300 years! Originally farmers, they began to replant with vineyards in the 1970s, with a shift towards viticulture as the family's newfound passion.
Today, the estate is primarily viticultural with 10 hectares of vines alongside maintaining a small herd of Limousin cows. The vineyards are all certified organic & biodynamic; the wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts with maturation in cement. The Côte Roannaise is located in the far southern end of the Loire, this area is often considered the unofficial "11th Cru of the Beaujolais," just north of Lyon, but far away enough to be considered a part of the Loire Valley. The region is dedicated to Gamay, found in classic soil types for the grape - granite, sand and gravel; its unique granite soils is big component in what gives way to its Beaujolais-like characteristics.
Domaine des Pothiers Côte Roannaise N°6 is made from Gamay Saint-Romain, a unique variation of Gamay found almost exclusively in the Côte Roannaise region of France. This vintage offers bright red fruit notes, with cherry and wild strawberry alongside subtle floral notes. Put a slight chill on it and enjoy alongside grilled salmon.
