Forjas del Salnes “Leirana” Albariño
RIAS BAIXAS | 2023
Rodrigo Méndez represents the fifth generation of his family’s centuries-long winemaking tradition. Based in the Val do Salnés which is the most coastal subzone of Rías Baixas DO, Rodrigo produces over 15 bottlings that showcase the microterroirs of this distinctive region. His grandfather was instrumental in establishing the Rías Baixas appellation, located in northwestern Spain just above Portugal, along the lush, green Atlantic coastline. Of the five subzones, Val do Salnés is the coolest and most fertile, with a strong maritime influence.
Rodrigo’s wines are precise, expressive reflections of Salnés terroir, shaped by traditional techniques and a deep commitment to organic, low-intervention farming. His approach includes fermenting with native yeasts, extended lees aging without bâtonnage, and thoughtful use of sulfur. He is particularly dedicated to preserving the region’s ancient vineyards, many of which are trained in the traditional parral (pergola) system. Grapes are harvested by hand after extended hang times to ensure full ripeness, and farming is fully organic.
“Leirana” is crafted from 100% Albariño, sourced from vines planted between 1952 and 1982 on sandy and granitic soils. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is aged in a combination of 70% neutral foudre and 30% stainless steel.
This is not your average Albariño. It’s layered and expressive with notes of pear, citrus zest, and crushed mineral. A subtle oxidative touch and hints of wood spice and caramel add complexity and character. Exceptionally food-friendly, this wine pairs beautifully with a wide range of seafood, from simply prepared langoustines to classic sole meunière.
