Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard “Bourgogne Rouge”

Burgundy, France |  2022

As we all may know, Burgundy can be prohibitively expensive on top of being difficult to find. We spend countless hours trying to source wines from Burgundy that are delicious as well as price-friendly to the everyday wine lover. Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard has continually been a go-to estate for high quality wines that are still fair on the pocketbook.

Fontaine-Gagnard is one Chassagne-Montrachet’s most respected domaines and their Bourgogne rouge punches way beyond its weight. Though Chassagne-Montrachet is known more for their white wines, this domaine shows just how incredibly Pinot Noir performs in the limestone rich soils. Coming from the excellent 2022 vintage, this wine displays the kind of finesse that Burgundy devotees seek out: pure red cherry, wild strawberry, and rose petals glide across the palate, anchored by a fine mineral thread and a whisper of spice. It's an inviting introduction to the house style, where restraint and clarity always take the lead.

Though this wine carries a regional label, it benefits from the estate’s holdings near some of the Côte de Beaune’s most cherished vineyards. The family’s traditional approach focuses on hand-harvested fruit, native yeasts, gentle extraction, and aging in mostly neutral oak allowing the terroir shine without artifice. The result is a Pinot Noir that’s vibrant yet subtle, structured yet supple, with a silkiness that speaks of expert craftsmanship.

Whether paired with roast duck, mushroom tarts, or simply served with a slight chill on a warm evening, this Bourgogne rouge is incredibly versatile. It’s the kind of wine that feels comfortable both on a Wednesday night and at a celebratory table. For anyone seeking to explore red Burgundy without heading straight into Premier Cru territory (and pricing), this bottle offers an authentic and elegant entry point. Because of the limited production of this wine, there will also not be any more bottles available outside of wine club.
