Campo alle Comete “Oltresogno”
BOLGHERI, ITALY | 2022
If we are going to offer you a Cabernet Sauvignon from Italy, you know we will make the stars align for you. Even though this boutique winery is a relatively young estate in Bolgheri, it’s backed by serious pedigree. Founded by Antonio Capaldo of Feudi di San Gregorio in Campania, the project was built around the idea of bringing a smaller-production, high-quality organically-farmed winery to one of Italy’s most prestigious growing regions. Situated in Castagneto Carducci along the Tuscan coast in Bolgheri, the estate benefits from a unique combination of warm Mediterranean sun and constant cooling breezes off the Tyrrhenian Sea ideal for growing Bordeaux varietals that gave Bolgheri its maverick-y reputation.
Bolgheri itself is one of the rare places where Bordeaux varietals feel completely at home outside of France. Cabernet Sauvignon thrives here thanks to the long growing season and diverse soils like sand, clay, and gravel, all contributing to that certain je ne sais quoi that helps make Bordeaux what it is. Campo alle Comete leans into that identity with a style that feels polished but not overworked, allowing both the fruit and the coastal influence to speak for itself. If you are a fan of the “goldilocks Cabernets” that lie in between California and Bordeaux stylistically, you have met your perfect match.
This Cabernet ages in a mix if stainless-steel, French barriques and tonneaux and lands right in that sweet spot between power and finesse. You’ll find classic notes of cassis, black cherry, and a touch of plum layered with hints of tobacco, black pepper, leather, and Mediterranean herbs. The tannins are very pretty and well-integrated, giving the wine structure without the heady Bordeaux weight, and the finish carries a subtle salinity that speaks to its proximity to the sea. It’s a beautiful example of Bolgheri Cabernet and would be paired perfectly with Osso Bucco or grilled lamb with Mediterranean herbs. This bottle also has plenty of time to hang out in the bottle if you want to hold onto it for a few more years.
