Evesham Wood Pinot Noir
Willamette Valley, Oregon | 2023
Evesham Wood was founded by Russ and Mary Rainey in 1986, on a lower terrace of the Eola-Amity Hills’s eastern slope in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. The east-facing, 13-acre estate vineyard is named Le Puits Sec, French for “the dry well,” as there is one in the vineyard.
After twenty-plus years, Russ and Mary began working closely with Erin Nuccio, who is the owner of Haden Fig. The founders saw not only an opportunity to retire early but also someone who would continue the Evesham Wood legacy and make wine according to the same philosophies. In August 2010, Erin and his wife, Jordan, became the owners of Evesham Wood Winery and Le Puits Sec Vineyard.
Vineyards such as Illahe (Mt. Pisgah, Polk County, Oregon AVA) and Mahonia (Willamette Valley, in the Jory hills just south of Salem) that Evesham Wood has been working with for decades compose most of this Pinot Noir bottling, along with Eola-Amity Hills AVA sites: Prophet, Koosah, Jubilee, Cortell Rose, and Sojeau. Those grapes are fermented in small lots (1.25-ton, open-topped fermenters) and punched down twice a day.
The Evesham Wood Pinot Noir has bright aromatics, with cherry, red apple, fresh flowers, and a touch of loam, with a textural silkiness that’s balanced by juicy acidity. Showing well now, this wine will continue to evolve over the coming years.
