Clos des Rocs “Chemin des Croix”

MORGON - cru Beaujolais, france |  2020

Beaujolais has truly evolved in recent years, shedding its reputation for simple, fruity wines as a new generation of winemakers gives the region the recognition it deserves! While stalwart producers always maintained Beaujolais' dignity, it faced a period of being perceived as producing bulk, uninteresting wines. But times have changed. This month's wine club selection was an easy choice after tasting it and learning its story.

"Chemin des Croix" stands as a unique offering from Clos des Rocs, their sole red wine amidst a portfolio focused on premium chardonnays from the Maconnais. Located in Morgon, which is my favorite Cru Beaujolais, it embodies Olivier Giroux's remarkable winemaking journey. With a commitment to quality, Olivier tends his 8 hectares of vines single-handedly, drawing from his roots in Mâcon and experiences in the northern Rhône valley.

Sourced from his wife's family estate, "Chemin des Croix" reflects Olivier's Burgundian heritage, emphasizing organic principles and a deep connection to the land. Every step, from biodynamic cultivation to hand-harvesting, is carried out with care.

In tasting "Chemin des Croix," I was immediately struck by its expression of terroir and the focused craftsmanship behind it. Olivier’s dedication to organic principles and his intimate knowledge of his vineyards shine through all of his wines, and this lone Gamay is no exception! “Chemin des Croix” captures the essence of Morgon with its signature depth and complexity, while also reflecting Olivier's personal journey and his family's legacy. Take this semi-carbonic beauty out on a picnic with a jamon beurre on baguette, or just a slice of ripe Camembert.
