Château du Cèdre
CAHORS , FRANCE | 2022
Before Argentinian Malbec became known for its plush fruit and easy charm, it was historically forged in the limestone hills of Cahors just south of Bordeaux where the grape has always leaned towards more earthy depth and elegant restraint. This is Malbec in its original home, shaped by cooler temperatures and calcareous soils that emphasize acidity, minerality, and firm, food-driven tannins rather than overt ripeness that we usually associate with this varietal.
Château du Cèdre is one of the estates most responsible for redefining modern Cahors. Founded in the 1950s and now run by brothers Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe (with the next generation already deeply involved), the domaine has long been a benchmark for organic farming and thoughtful winemaking in the region. Their vineyards sit on the classic limestone scree slopes and high terraces above the Lot River, and their philosophy centers on letting Malbec speak clearly, without excess extraction or heavy-handed oak.
The 2022 Cahors du Cèdre is dark-fruited yet lifted, offering black cherry, dried herbs, graphite, and subtle spice, all carried by firm, chalky tannins that feel architectural rather than aggressive. It’s a wine built for the table and a reminder of why Cahors remains Malbec’s spiritual home. This wine is a serious, soulful, and deeply expressive style with richer dishes like winter stews and chilis, but also a surprisingly great pairing with Korean bbq!
