Uccelliera “Rapace”

The D.O.C.G. of Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most heralded and recognized examples of Sangiovese in Tuscany. Yet there is another side to Montalcino.

The history of Bordeaux varietals in Montalcino represents a relatively recent chapter in the region's winemaking tradition. In the late 20th century, the introduction of Bordeaux varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, to Tuscany began. This was partly influenced by a growing interest in international grape varieties and a desire to experiment with new winemaking styles and techniques. The Bordeaux varietals were seen as a way to add complexity, structure, and richness to Tuscan wines, complementing the natural characteristics of Sangiovese.

In Montalcino, renowned for its prestigious Brunello di Montalcino wines, some producers began blending Bordeaux varietals with Sangiovese to create so-called "Super Tuscan" wines. These wines, often labeled as IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica), gained international acclaim for their innovative approach and high quality.

Founded in 1986 by Andrea Cortonesi, Uccelliera has established itself over the years as one of the leading producers in Montalcino. Located in the hillsides of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, this 10 hectare domain has vineyards in the shadows of Mount Amiata and Poggio d’Arna. 

Not only is Ucceliera one of the top producers of Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, they produce an excellent Super Tuscan called “Rapace.” A blend of 70% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet, the grapes are grown in a soil composed of calcareous clay, sand, that is rich in minerals. The grapes are co-fermented with natural yeast in stainless steel, and aged in French oak for 12 months. 

The 2019 “Rapace” offers beautiful notes of blackberry, wild strawberry and savory herbs on the nose. The palate is silky and rich, but framed beautifully by acidity, soft tannins and a long spice-driven finish. This is a lot of wine for the money!
