Bianka und Daniel Schmitt "Freiheit" Rot

RHEINHESSEN, GERMANY |  2023

Bianka and Daniel Schmitt are part of the new guard reshaping the identity of Germany’s Rheinhessen region. They farm their family vineyards biodynamically, work with a light hand in the cellar, and consistently deliver wines that feel alive, expressive, and rooted in place.

While the Schmitts are often associated with the natural wine movement, what stands out in their work isn’t trendiness—it’s sincerity. Everything they produce feels thoughtful, deeply agricultural, and refreshingly unforced. “Freiheit” (“Freedom”) is their gateway red: joyful, juicy, and an honest reflection of their ethos.

The 2023 “Freiheit” Rot is a blend of regional red varieties—typically Dornfelder, Portugieser, and Pinot Noir—vinified with minimal intervention and bottled unfiltered. The wine pours a vibrant ruby and immediately shows its personality: bright aromatics of red currant, sour cherry, and wild strawberry, layered with subtle notes of crushed violets, rosehip, and a faint whisper of savory spice. On the palate, it’s light-bodied but energetic, with crunchy red fruit, soft tannins, and that unmistakable freshness that comes from biodynamic farming and gentle extraction. There’s a slight herbal lift and a touch of earth on the finish that keep the wine grounded and endlessly drinkable.

“Freiheit” is exactly the kind of chilled red I want on hand at all times. Serve it cool and pair it with roasted chicken, grilled sausages, or mushroom dishes.

In a world where many natural-leaning wines can feel more rustic than intentional, the Schmitts deliver clarity and precision without losing charm. “Freiheit” Rot is biodynamic, vibrant, and as welcoming as red wine gets—a bottle that captures the spirit of modern Rheinhessen and the integrity of two growers who truly care about their craft.
