Tenuta di Ghizzano "Il Ghizzano"
TERRE DE PISA TOSCANA BIANCO, Italy | 2023
Tenuta di Ghizzano is one of the most quietly important estates on the Tuscan coast, located in the small hilltop village of Ghizzano, near Pisa. The Venerosi Pesciolini family has owned the property for generations, and under Ginevra Venerosi Pesciolini the estate has become a reference point for thoughtful, organic and biodynamic farming in this part of Tuscany. While the region is often associated with reds, especially Sangiovese and Bordeaux varieties, Ghizzano also makes incredible white wines with the same level of care and dedication.
“Il Ghizzano” Bianco is made from traditional Tuscan white grapes, Vermentino, Trebbiano and Malvasia Bianca. The Vermentino is pressed directly and fermented at low temperature with indigenous yeasts, while the Trebbiano and Malvasia see a short period of skin contact before fermentation in stainless steel. The result is a wine that captures the best of both sides of the blend, the lift and coastal freshness of Vermentino, with a little more texture, aroma and old-school Tuscan character from Trebbiano and Malvasia.
The 2023 is bright, easy to love, and exactly the kind of white I want on the table this time of year. Think citrus, white peach, wild herbs, dried flowers, and a clean mineral finish, with just enough texture to make it more interesting than a simple aperitivo wine. This is a natural fit for seafood, summer vegetables, or a plate of fresh cheeses and good olive oil.
