Domaine Fontchêne “Les Antiques”

ALPILLES, FRANcE | 2023

Domaine Fontchêne is one of the coolest cats of Provence's Alpilles where winemaker René Milan has built a reputation for crafting wines of remarkable purity. After taking over the family estate in 2013, Milan converted the vineyards to certified organic and biodynamic farming, believing that healthy soils are the foundation of expressive wines. The vineyards, situated just outside Saint-Rémy-de-Provence near the ancient Roman ruins of Glanum, are rooted in limestone-rich clay soils strewn with the same rounded galets roulés that define nearby Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In both the vineyard and cellar, Milan embraces a minimal-intervention philosophy, relying on native yeast fermentations, gentle handling, and restrained sulfur additions to allow the character of the site to shine through.

The 2022 "Les Antiques" Blanc is a Rhône-inspired blend led by Grenache Blanc and Clairette, supported by Marsanne and Chardonnay. Fermented with native yeasts and aged on its fine lees to build texture, the wine beautifully balances richness with precision. Aromatically it opens with white peach, apricot, preserved lemon, white flowers, and subtle notes of fennel and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, layers of ripe orchard fruit are framed by vibrant acidity and a distinct saline, mineral character that reflects the cool influence of Provence despite the region's abundant sunshine.

This is a white wine that perfectly captures the intersection of Provence and the Southern Rhône offering the generosity and texture of Rhône varieties while maintaining the freshness and aromatic lift that make Provençal whites so compelling. It is equally at home alongside grilled seafood, roast chicken with herbs, fresh chèvre, or simple Mediterranean fare, but it is also captivating enough to enjoy on its own. All you have to do now is close your eyes and imagine yourself on the Meduiterranean in Provence while sipping on this gem.
