By Farr “Irrewara”

Geelong, Australia |  2021

By Farr is one of Australia’s most respected family-run estates, based in the Geelong region of Victoria. The story begins with Gary Farr, who brought a Burgundian perspective back to Australia after working harvests in France in the 1970s. Today, the domaine is led by his son Nick Farr, who continues that philosophy with a focus on site expression, thoughtful farming, and wines built for structure and longevity.

Geelong lies southwest of Melbourne and is shaped by a cool maritime climate influenced by Bass Strait. Steady winds and moderate temperatures extend the growing season, allowing Pinot Noir to ripen slowly while retaining freshness. Ironstone, limestone, and clay soils are common throughout the region, contributing depth, savory nuance, and tension.

“Irrewarra” is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from a cool, elevated site inland from the coast. The vineyard’s exposure and iron-rich soils naturally limit yields, producing fruit with concentration and natural structure. In the cellar, the wine is fermented with native yeasts using 100% whole clusters, a defining element of the By Farr style.

This approach brings lift, spice, and a firm, finely woven tannin profile, shaping a Pinot Noir that emphasizes savory and mineral character alongside dark red fruit. Aging in French oak is measured and supportive, allowing the vineyard and structure to remain at the forefront. The result is a serious, composed expression of Australian Pinot Noir, built for the table and capable of further development with time.

“Irrewarra” pairs beautifully with roast chicken, duck, pork, or mushroom-driven dishes, as well as lighter game birds. A great wine for the table.
