Luca Currado Vietti

If you are a fan of Piedmont wines, you are likely familiar with the renowned Vietti name, one of Piedmont's greatest wineries with a legacy dating back to the late 19th century. Custodians of a cultural and sentimental legacy in the noble lands of the Langhe, Luca Currado Vietti and his wife Elena Penna spent roughly 35 years at the helm of Vietti before parting ways in January 2023. Recently the couple, along with their children Michele and Giulia, have embarked on a new personal venture:

Cascina Penna-Currado

Cascina Penna-Currado is the family’s artisanal, small-production winery rooted in their deep experience and commitment to excellence in the Langhe. Based in a renovated cascina in Serralunga d’Alba dating back to 1554, their vineyards span pristine parcels in the Langhe and Derthona areas. The stunning label, an original artwork by their favorite artist Giuseppe Stampone, features children gazing over the horizon, symbolizing a new beginning and untraveled roads.

For this day only, we will be serving the below three wines by the glass for the very first time in Chicago! This is a rare opportunity to try these wines as not many bottles were released to our market, so be sure to stop by to be the first to experience them first-hand before anyone else!

The Wines

Cascina Penna-Currado ‘Bricco Lago’, Dolcetto d'Alba, 2022

Vineyards lie in Monforte, in an area with particularly great natural biodiversity. Elena and Luca strongly believe in Dolcetto as an important “tool” for young wine drinkers and their entry level exposure to the Langhe. The grapes are vinified whole cluster and aging takes place in stainless steel for this fragrant rendition of Dolcetto.

Cascina Penna-Currado ‘Carra’, Barbera d'Alba, 2022

Luca and Elena have always been particularly invested in Barbera d’Alba as they were among the first to invest in it seriously. They believe strongly in the potential of this grape in communicating what the Langhe has to offer to a wide audience. The Carrà site is in the San Sebastiano area of Municipality of Monforte, with a particularly great natural biodiversity. Grapes come predominantly from two parcels; one planted in 1965 and another in 2000. The wine is vinified partially whole cluster and aged in botti making it rich and concentrated but not too ripe

Cascina Penna-Currado 'Bricco Lago', Langhe Nebbiolo, 2022

From a unique vineyard site in Monforte d’Alba surrounded by unmatched biodiversity and clay and limestone soils, these Nebbiolo vines cascade down from the church of San Sebastiano towards the only natural lake in the Langhe. Cold maceration is used, followed by whole berry fermentation (not whole cluster, as they wish to avoid excessive power). 8 to 12 months of barrel aging set this Nebbiolo into a different realm in relation to other wines in its category.
