Hello Le Midi subscribers!

There were so many exciting new additions to add to today’s newsletter that it was difficult to choose! We always want to keep our customers on their toes through constantly changing up our selections. Variety is the spice of life. :)

We just had one seat open up for our Loire Valley tasting on the 17th, and there are a couple remaining for our Southern Hemisphere deep-dive at the end of the month. You all know how fun these tastings are, so be sure to fill those seats!

Since our new cocktail program has been working out so well, we have very our in-house mixologist Steven who is whipping up some warm-weather gems that will hit the menu soon. In the meantime, if you have not tried his “Clarified Corn & Oil”, you better get on it soon. It takes him almost an entire day to prepare it, and it is absolutely worth it.

Glass Pour of the Week

Domaine Luneau-Papin “La Grange”
Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie, France

As you can see above, this new glass pour comes from a wine appellation that has a lot of words in it. These words all have great significance though, so they’re good to know when you go shopping and are looking for another wine from this area of the Loire Valley.

First of all, many assume that the varietal of this wine is Muscadet as it is very close to looking like the Bordeaux varietal Muscadelle, but this grape has an even more entertaining name: Melon de Bourgogne - neither a melon, nor used in Burgundy, but that’s what makes wine studies so fun! Winemakers will usually lovingly cut the name and refer to it just as melon, but this grape is also notoriously pretty boring on its own unless it’s put into the hands of those who know how to properly grow and vinify it to capture all of the hidden potential within.

Muscadet is a far western appellation in the Loire Valley that is known to grow the best Melon de Bourgogne, and Sèvre-et-Maine is the sub-region that is the most highly regarded due its soils and proximity to the Loire river, and Sur Lie is the last magical element that transforms the melon experience from good to great. Sur Lie translates to “on lees” which refers to the extended contact the wine is given on the dead yeast cells created during fermentation. When you think of Champagne and how incredible it is, that quality is also in great part due to extended lees contact. For melon, the more the better.

The famous Domaine Luneau-Papin’s “La Grange” originates from 46-year-old vines thriving in mica-schist soils, showcasing a stunning green-gold hue. Upon pouring, it releases an aromatic explosion of minerality alongside hints of Bartlett pears and lemon zest. The palate offers brisk acidity, saline minerals, and vibrant notes of lemon and lime, complemented by nuances of matcha, white flowers, and herbs. Crafted solely from Melon de Bourgogne grapes, the wine undergoes pneumatic pressing and fermentation in subterranean ceramic-lined vats with wild yeasts, then ages sur lie for 7 months before being bottled unfiltered and with no added SO2. If you like price-friendly lean, light, crisp, and minerally wines - look no further!
