Glass Pour Feature

Blackwater “Pleasure Garden”, Palomino

There are so many facets of this new glass pour that we love talking about. Most of our readers already know our love affair with South African wines, and this one is a stand-out for many reasons: it’s a weird white Spanish varietal whose vines are almost 100 years old, the production is a scant 300 cases, and the wine is singing after aging for six years in bottle. All the things we love!

After traveling the world and working at different wineries, winemaker Francois Haasbroek fell in love with the elegance and refinement of European wines and decided to bring that ethos forward to cool-climate appellations of his home country. Francois works with some of the most respected vignerons who he has established strong relationships with and who treat their soils and vines with utmost care and precision.

This wine is a really unique one in that it uses Palomino which is a varietal best known for sherry production in Spain’s Jerez region. It is also a varietal that is infrequently turned into a table wine on its own, but the pre-centenarian vines take the otherwise neutral varietal into a different stratosphere. Palomino doesn’t naturally produce a lot of malic acid, but you would never know that from the sheer electricity that shoots from a glass of this wine. The vine’s age and cool-climate of Robertson contributes to this complexity and ability to - it was actually where the cuvée name “Pleasure Garden” came from as it refers to Alfred Hitchcock’s first silent film made in 1927 when these vines were planted. From there the cold pre-soak and partially extended skin contact in concrete-egg for 14 months adds greater depth.

The result? A wine unlike anything you’ve tasted. The nose offers a confectionary element reminiscent of circus peanuts, lemon pith, and crushed rock. The palate is bright and youthful, with notes of yellow pear, salt, white pepper, and finger lime, leading to a long finish of baked brioche and hazelnuts showcasing hinting at its age in bottle. For a low-acid varietal, it’s unexpectedly mouthwatering.

Lots of very fun words that may be a bit intimidating to try to pronounce, so when you come in just say “I’d like the Bosnian white wine”, and we’ll know what you mean. Located in the prized winemaking region of Herzogovina, this light white varietal is your everyday drinking white but with tons of personality. Karate champion turned winemaker, Oliver Mandarić, took over his family winery in 2014 and upgraded it producing wines translating the rocky terrain of their estate vineyards. Bright and refreshing, it’s great with seafood and warmed brie.

This 100% Nerello Mascalese comes from grapes grown in the lauded town of Passpisciaro on the northernmost slopes of Mt Etna in the contrada Feudo di Mezzo. Nerello Mascalase takes center stage in this area with its blended soil types of volcanic ash and sand along with various elevations and microclimates. This is a classically built Nerello full of red fruits, tobacco, red florals, anise, and is great for pairing with game and aged cheeses. It drinks perfectly right now at five years of age, but still has room to grow!

Wine Tasting Events

We’re adding on a tasting Wednesday, September 25th that you won’t want to miss! We’ll be comparing some of the best Chardonnays from the US next to some of the best white Burgundies to see who is doing it better - and let me tell you, they are all doing it incredibly well.

This is a tasting where we will show the wines we’ll be pouring first before you arrive so you can see the heat we’re bringing out that night. Some of the most rare and famous wines from their region!

This will be held at our communal table from 7:00-9:00 and will include light bites alongside. $100/person.
