LE MIDI UPDATES

Hello Le Midi subscribers!

November is upon us and with it comes a lot of news for you.

We have completely updated our by-the-glass menu with more cool-weather inspired wines, we have added a few new treats to our apéro menu, and we are locked and loaded for getting the month of to a great start.

Even though all of our seats to the November tastings have sold out, mark your calendar for our annual holiday decorating extravaganza on Sunday, November 24th. This is just a fun day when the ornaments come out, we offer our beloved Midi Mulled Wine, and make some delicious seasonal treats to enjoy while being serenaded by the likes of Mariah Carey, Nat King-Cole, and Seth’s personal favorite, Dolly Parton. :)
(This is not a ticketed event, but it can get crowded so get ready to be cozy, share lots of laughter, and help ring in the cold.)

Castellare di Castellina, Sangioveto/Canaiolo
Chianti Classico, Tuscany, 2022

In April 2018, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Tuscany and Verona, including attending the world-renowned VinItaly tasting. Held annually, VinItaly showcases thousands of wines from across Italy and I was invited with other wine professionals to spend time in Chianti before venturing over to Verona where the festival is held. Needless to say, the weekend was an unforgettable blur of hundreds of tastings and Italian merrymaking. Tough job, I know.

One standout experience from the journey was visiting the Castellare di Castellina estate, nestled high in the hills of the lauded Chianti Classico subregion of Chianti. After sampling wines from at least 20 wineries throughout Chianti, Castellare’s wines stood out with their distinct and nuanced approach. Founded in the 1970s by Paolo Panerai through the merger of four historic estates – Castellare, Caselle, San Niccolò, and Le Case – this estate played a significant role in the “Renaissance of Italian wine.” Panerai's pioneering work in vineyard experimentation refined the Sangioveto grape (a local variant of Sangiovese) and innovated techniques in concrete and oak maturation. With a commitment to organic farming, Castellare’s labels feature beautiful illustrations of rare birds, symbolizing their dedication to nature and heritage.

The 2022 vintage is a perfect example of Castellare's craft, made from 95% Sangioveto with a touch of Canaiolo. This wine offers a complex profile with a nose of wild cherries, red currants, and violets, followed by earthy layers of dried herbs and hints of underbrush. Aged for seven months in used barriques, it gains a subtle warmth from the oak without overpowering the vibrant fruit. Additional bottle aging rounds out the tannins, resulting in a robust yet refined wine with a long, elegant finish.
