Hello Le Midi subscribers!

The patio just gets better and better. We have brought in some gorgeous plants to make the patio experience a little more private while adding a little European flavor as well. In honor of the warmer weather, we will be showcasing three of our most popular rosés for our featured retail wines below.

Last night’s white Burgundy tasting was epic and the red Burgundy tasting next week will be even more so. Though all tastings sold out in a flash this month, a few more will be coming out next week so look out for the e-mail.

Glass Pour of the Week

Vinzas Artas “Ghirada Garaunele”
Barbagia, Sardinia

Only a mere 1,073 bottles of this stunning Sardinian Cannonau were produced, and we couldn’t resist the chance to offer it to try by the glass. Le Midi is also the only Chicago location to carry this wine outside of Perman Wine Selections, so that’s a testament to how much we love it!

Cannonau is considered an autochthonous varietal specific to Sardinia despite having its history linked to Grenache, so there is still some debate around that. Garaunele is one of Vinzas Artas’ smallest single-vineyards (.5 hectares) that beautifully conveys the essence of the calcerous-granite soils in the rocky and arid Barbagia IGT. Fun tidbit: the name Barbagia comes from “Barbarians” and is a name given during Roman times by a Roman Senator due to the “barbaric” qualities of its people; however, this was one of the few spots that the Romans could never overtake and occupy. The inhabitants of Barbagia take great pride in their tough reputation and affiliation with this ancient and isolated region. This fierce independence is illustrated in their winemaking ethos as well.

The 2020 is still youthful with pronounced aromas of fresh dark red and blue fruits like cherry, raspberry, and crushed summer blueberries and blackberries. Subtle notes of smoke, savory nuances, and dried herbs add complexity to the lifted, fresh nose. The palate is full-bodied with ripe, perfectly integrated tannins and a touch more structure. High flavor intensity paired with elegant weight makes the wine float over the palate, showcasing a mineral/stone component that peaks at the end. The finish is persistent and elongated with lingering fruit, savory herbs, minerality, and surprising freshness. An outstanding wine!
